Tom Begley, professor of the biological sciences and associate director of the RNA Institute, has been named a SUNY Distinguished Professor, joining the university system's highest academic rank in recognition of his globally impactful RNA research and exceptional mentorship. Dr. Begley leads the Doctoral Training Program in RNA Science and Technology. Begley lab studies how cellular stress triggered by environmental factors or treatments like chemotherapy affects RNA molecules and contributes to diseases such as cancer. His lab has shown that chemical marks on RNA can be reprogrammed to help cells survive stress and has developed computational tools to analyze RNA modifications. These findings hold promise for improving cancer treatments and understanding disease progression. Begley's passion for discovery and mentoring has driven advances in therapeutic research and inspired a new generation of scientists.
